Gran Clavel
Avant-garde and tradition in a traditional restaurant in the middle of Gran Vía
Innovation and tradition in a quintessential Madrid restaurant right on Gran Vía.
Gran Clavel is a restaurant, wine bar and vermouth bar, all under one roof in the most iconic stretch of Gran Vía avenue. It’s a standard-bearer for Madrid which embraces popular and traditional culture and food, a space like the city itself: steeped in tradition yet cosmopolitan, nostalgic yet forward-looking, a place that honours the past but has innovation at its core.
Located on the ground floor of the Iberostar Las Letras hotel, it’s housed in a century-old Neo-Plateresque building that was designed by the architect Cesáreo Iradier in 1915 and refurbished in 2002. The gastro-space has two entrances and an excellent location, occupying the corner where Gran Vía meets Calle del Clavel and bounded at the rear by Calle de Caballero de Gracia.
Its three different areas, which are well lit and inviting thanks to the establishment’s large windows, are distinguished by careful decoration in keeping with the respective ambience of each one. You’ll find updated versions of traditional bar elements such as upholstery, marble bars, high tables with stools and low tables with armchairs. It’s an atmosphere of warm, inviting tones both on the walls and on the columns, and furniture in shades of brown and orange combined with decorative plants and, of course, carnations (“clavel” means carnation) on the dining tables, a flower that symbolises Madrid’s popular festivities.
