RIU Plaza de España Hotel

The city’s first skyscraper houses a luxury hotel with panoramic views of Madrid

The Riu Plaza de España Hotel is located in the emblematic Edificio España,on Gran Vía avenue. Built between 1948 and 1953, this 26-storey skyscraper standing 117 metres high was once the highest building in the city. Bought by RIU, the international hotel chain, it was inaugurated in the summer of 2019.

The hotel has 585 rooms, a restaurant, lobby bar, gym and an outdoor pool on the 21st floor. Its facilities boast 17 meeting rooms, including an auditorium with a capacity of up to 1500 people, making it the largest auditorium in such a centric area of the city.

The sky bar really stands out, with two areas; one of them, located on the 26th floor is decorated with motifs from Madrid’s famous “Movida movement” while the other, on the highest floor of the building, offers 360º panoramic views of the city not to mention its glass walkway that makes you feel you’re walking on the Madrid sky.

Its interior has preserved the building’s art-deco style and there are numerous vintage objects at the main entrance, on stairways or in elevators, with original details of the building such as bas-reliefs, green marble or footlights, just as they were in the 1950s and 60s.
