Teatro María Guerrero
A century-old and emblematic theatre in the city centre.
The Teatro María Guerrero is a public theatre managed by the Centro Drámatico Nacional on behalf of the Ministry of Culture. A theatre next to the Paseo de Recoletos that has its historical origins in the Theatre of the Princess of 1885.
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1996, we should highlight its main façade and its entrance porch that have retained the building’s neo-Classical style in spite of several reforms. In the interior we find a wealth of decoration in the entrance lobby and staircase, with details such as a carved medallion and a large oil portrait of the actress and theatrical entrepreneur who gives her name to the building.
The Main Theatre is one of the city’s most emblematic theatres and can seat 622 spectators. It is laid out in the form of a horseshoe and decorated in red velvet and gold leaf. The balconies of the boxes and the three floors are wrought iron. There is an outstanding original rose window on the ceiling, clearly of neo-Mudejar influence, made from hundreds of multi-coloured crystals and gold leaf. It offers good visibility from the stalls, rather less so perhaps from the seats on either side.
The theatre has a second space on the lower floor called the Princess Theatre. This is a small room for performances whose maximum capacity varies depending on the layout of the seats but never exceeds 120 spectators. It is a cosy and intimate space designed to accommodate innovative stage productions.
