Twin Bridges Madrid Río Park
Two similar and quite unique footbridges in Madrid Río Park
Madrid Río Park has two footbridges with a similar structure near Matadero Madrid and the Plaza Río 2 shopping centre. These are the Invernadero (Greenhouse) Bridge and the Matadero (Slaughterhouse) Bridge, inaugurated in 2010 and popularly known as the twin bridges, designed to connect the neighbourhoods on either side of the river with the new park and the Matadero cultural centre.
They are two footbridges with a unique style in the shape of a lightweight concrete vault that resemble an inverted canoe and from which lightweight panels are hung by means of steel tensors. They serve both as crossing elements and as a viewpoint. The concrete gives them a traditional look that reminds one of the Brutalist architecture of the 1960s.
The vaults are decorated with a mosaic from Daniel Canogar’s artistic project called Constellations, made with small glass tiles that represent images of residents who seem to be floating in the air.
