Biblioteca Pública Municipal Eugenio Trías
A glass-fronted library in a historic building in El Retiro Park.
The Eugenio Trias Municipal Public Library is a cultural facility that opened in 2013. It occupies two large pavilions in the installations of the Menagerie, the former zoo, in El Retiro Park. It is dedicated to Eugenio Trias, a prestigious philosopher and a paradigm of ethical thinking.
During the restoration and rehabilitation of the building, carried out by architects Jaime Nadal and Sebastian Araujo, a large longitudinal pavilion was recovered as was another smaller cross-sectional one; the third building is a new construction.
The original two-storey building incorporates the use of glass allowing the gardens to be reflected on it, and endowing the spaces with great luminosity. Inside, they retained and adapted some of the original structures to new uses. For example, the old cages along the south façade were converted into glass reading cubicles.
The library has a total surface area of 3,794 square metres that house a consultation and reading room, workgroup rooms and a multipurpose room. Also of note is its access from El Retiro Park itself, through an area covered by tiles and surrounded by vegetation that is visible through the glass walls.
