Calle de Sierra Gorda

The Calle de Sierra Gorda is a somewhat erratic street that runs through the historical Villa de Vallecas district, popularly known as Vallecas Pueblo. A street that initially widens into a paved square where we find one of the neighbourhood’s architectural landmarks, none other than the Church of San Pedro ad Víncula, whose slender tower presides over the old town of Vallecas.

The result of successive stages of construction, the temple reflects various styles such as Mudéjar, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The main church was built in the early 17th century by Juan de Herrera, although we owe the tower to another illustrious architect, Ventura Rodríguez, who designed it in 1775.  Of note is its Renaissance façade with a representation of the Liberation of Saint Peter and the geometric mouldings in the vault of the central nave. There is another entrance with neo-Classical style masonry.

After a pedestrian stretch of single-storey houses and two- and three-storey residential buildings, the street turns into a broad space in which we find the Municipal Auditorium of the Villa de Vallecas, the plot of land set aside for the installation of the typical itinerant flea market and sports courts in wooded surroundings.
