Catedral de Santa María Magdalena

An orthodox Neo-Byzantine-style church in Hortaleza.

Santa María Magdalena Russian Orthodox Cathedral, located on Gran Vía avenue in the Canillas neighbourhood of Hortaleza, opened in 2013. The stylish, imposing building designed in the Neo-Byzantine style is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church in Madrid. Its five golden domes are crowned with five crosses that sit atop white turrets.

Located next to Pinar del Rey metro station, the orthodox cathedral offers various religious services during the week and holds mass following the orthodox rite. The structure as a whole, which stands on a 756-square-metre lot, has a basilica with two different parts as well as an annexe for parochial visits which also houses Casa Rusia Cultural Centre.

The annexe is connected to the basilica by a glazed structure that serves a vestibule and is topped with a copper-toned bell tower shaped like an octagonal pyramid. The basilica, inspired by Russia’s oldest cathedral, has a square floor plan with three apses at the front.
