Cementerio de La Almudena

One of the city’s most important cemetery with architectural and sculptural monuments.

La Almudena Cemetery is the main cemetery in the city, created in 1884 under the name «The Necropolis of the East”. Its surface area, which covers more than 120 hectares, makes it the largest cemetery in Madrid and one of the largest in Western Europe.

The current cemetery may be divided into three parts: the Civil Cemetery, the Hebrew Cemetery and the old Cemetery of Our Lady of the Almudena which is where the section known as the “Epidemics Cemetery” is to be found. It houses the remains of prominent political figures, intellectuals and artists.

The entrance portico is in the Modernist style with Neo-Mudéjar influences, with brick, granite and limestone being used for the columns. Numerous pantheons, mausoleums, chapels and monuments of artistic interest abound within its interior, some of which date as far back as the end of the 19th century. These include sculptural and architectural ensembles of such diverse styles as Neo-Gothic, Neo-Romanesque, Modernism or Eclecticism.
