Centro Deportivo Municipal Daoíz y Velarde
Sports facilities in a refurbished industrial unit
Daoíz y Velarde Municipal Sports Centre is located in the Pacífico neighbourhood in the Retiro district. It is one of the city’s more unusual sports facilities, as it is located in a former industrial unit, part of what was once the Daoíz y Velarde barracks.
The refurbishment work to turn it into a sports centre maintained the exterior architecture which is so representative of the industrial and military heritage of the city, with details such as the brick-clad façade and the wrought-iron structure of the units, very typical of industrial factories.
The interior has retained the brickwork and the large arched windows that bathe the modern sports facilities in natural light. Occupying a surface area of 9496 square metres, it has a 25-metre indoor swimming pool and a multi-purpose sports hall with a grandstand, used for basketball, indoor football or volleyball.
The other amenities are completed by an outdoor glass paddle tennis court and multipurpose rooms in the interior of the hall used as a gym and as a fitness room.
