Colonia Nuestra Señora del Loreto

A 1950s housing estate for airport workers.

Nuestra Señora del Loreto was a 1949 housing estate project that the company Iberia sponsored for its employees. It was one of the first developments in the old town of Barajas for workers in the nearby airport, and it has retained its uniform appearance over the years after some renovations.

The development consists of large, long, identical blocks of flats where small, semi-public open courtyards have been created. In the streets Calle del Muro and Calle del Gran Poder, the visual impression they give of being big mansions arranged in the form of a comb exemplifies Madrid’s post-war urban planning.

The public square the estate is named after is of key importance in the surrounding area. The development is structured into a U-shaped three-storey block whose ground floor design includes a first exterior corridor lined with columns and a second which houses business premises, with the homes located on the floors above.
