Mercado Municipal de Antón Martín

A traditional market with modern restaurants

The Market of Antón Martín is a traditional wholesale farmer’s market with a track record of 77 years as a permanent market. Located in the city’s historical centre, close to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and Calle Atocha, it was originally a place where food was sold in the city centre.

Access is through three different doors, the main one on Calle Santa Isabel, and two side ones, one on Pasaje Doré (with stalls that open onto the street itself) and the other on Calle Duque Fernán Núñez. Inside it is a three-storey structure, with the stalls and restaurants occupying the ground and first floor.

Nowadays the market offers a mix of traditional market trading and new dining options. The traditional market stalls that sell meat, poultry, fruit, fish and varied food all follow a similar aesthetic. In the new restaurants however, we can appreciate different styles and interior design.

In today’s catering industry, international cuisine is to the fore with a wide variety of original proposals by restauranteurs from all over the world. By way of an interesting detail, the third floor is home to Madrid’s most prestigious flamenco school, the Amor de Dios Flamenco Art and Spanish Dance Centre, with its corresponding rehearsal and dance rooms.
