Mercado de San Miguel

Iron architecture in a building that is very popular with tourists

San Miguel Market is a century-old establishment located in the historic centre known as the Madrid de los Austrias (Hapsburg Madrid). It stands where the old open-air market that supplied the centre of the capital once stood; it became a stable venue when the building was inaugurated in 1916.

The building that houses the market is one of the best examples of iron architecture in the city and was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the Monument category. In 2009, it became the first gastronomic market in Madrid, known for its top quality products and wines from all corners of Spain, delivered to the public from 20 permanent stalls plus 3 mobile ones. This is the city’s tourism epicentre, and it receives more than 10 million visitors a year.

The rectangular building has two floors: the ground floor with an entry from the street, and a basement for warehouses, each with an area of approximately 2000 square meters. The iron and glass design and the high ceiling allow natural light to enter the building.
