Mercado Municipal de la Cebada
A traditional food market in the centre of the city
Located in the heart of the La Latina neighbourhood in the Centro district, the La Cebada Municipal Market is one of the largest markets in Madrid, and one of the ones that has better preserved its traditional appearance.
The building has two trading floors with a surface area of more than 6,000 square metres, divided into 91 stalls. Food shops that have maintained their traditional style, where they sell meat, cured meats, fruit and vegetables, fish, and poultry, as well as other more specialised establishments. We can add to these spaces a floor set aside for storage and a car park for 392 cars.
In the interior of the building there is a large, impressive mural representing Madrid’s most important monuments, painted in 1962 by Carlos Rincón, an artist from Madrid, and six red, vaulted ceilings that close the building.
