Mercado Municipal de San Fernando
A popular market with a large central skylight
The Market of San Fernando was inaugurated in 1944 and is the work of the architect Casto Fernández-Shaw. Located in Calle Embajadores in the Lavapiés neighbourhood, it is a building with a simple layout, distributed over three floors built on concrete with façades that are a mixture of brick and granite.
The monumental nature of the outer façade was retained after the refurbishment that was carried out in 1998, as were the towers that end in spires, and the granite staircase.
The first trading floor features an open central courtyard of some 200 square metres from which the various stalls are distributed in corridors, dominated by an impressive skylight. The basements are notable, as are the views from the roof of the building and the graffiti that adorns the loading dock.
It currently integrates traditional market stalls, alternative shops with catering services and modern bars.
