Plaza de Colón
A public space with outstanding architectural elements at a crossroads on the Paseo de la Castellana
Plaza de Colón is a huge public space and traffic hub where Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo de Recoletos, Calle Génova, and Calle Goya meet. One of the city’s most popular squares. Due to its size, important public events have taken place and take place here.
One of its most important spaces is the monument to Christopher Columbus which was built in 1885: Columbus presides the square as traffic whirls around him. A 17-metre-high, white marble sculpture in the Neo-Gothic style on an impressive pedestal sculpted in stone.
Surrounding the square are the Torres Colón, two twin skyscrapers erected in 1976, built around a central concrete skeleton fixed into the ground. Standing 116 metres and 23 floors high, their silhouette is part of the Madrid skyline.
The pedestrian area includes the Descubrimiento Garden, a park inaugurated in 1970 in which visitors can admire several sculptures including a monument dedicated to the discovery of America. Underneath the square are the Fernán Gómez – Centro Cultural de la Villa cultural space and Pasaje Colón.
