Plaza de la Villa
Plaza de la Villa is one of medieval Madrid’s best preserved architectural and monumental ensembles. Located in the historical centre, close to Puerta del Sol and accessible from Calle Mayor, three small streets start here which follow the medieval layout of the city: Calle del Codo, Calle del Cordón and Calle de Madrid.
The square adopted its current name in the 15th century when the city was granted the title “Noble and Loyal”. The square contains the main façades of three buildings of great historical and artistic value that were built in different historical periods:
The oldest is the Lujanes House and Tower (15th century), built in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. Standing in the east side of the square, it is currently the headquarters of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.
The Casa de Cisneros building (16th century), is a Plateresque-style palace at the end of the southern part of the complex. Located on the west side of the square, the Baroque-style Casa de la Villa building (17th century) used to be one of the headquarters of Madrid City Council.
A large flowerbed presides over the centre of the square next to the monument in memory of Don Alvaro de Bazán, in a patrimonial environment that is still used for institutional events.
