Plaza Santa Ana
Plaza Santa Ana is a famous open space in the Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter) in Madrid’s historical centre. Its name comes from the old convent that was dedicated to Saint Ana and stood on a section of this site until 1810, when it was turned into a public square.
Today it is a quadrangular space mostly occupied by the terraces of nearby restaurants and bars. Vehicles can access the Plaza on one of its sides, and there is an underground car park. This tree-lined square is rounded off by two playgrounds and street furniture.
On its perimeter stands the Teatro Español, a Neoclassical building dating from 1895, which in turn was a refurbishment of the former Teatro del Príncipe, dating back to the 16th century. Facing the theatre today is the ME Madrid Reina Victoria Hotel, an elegant modernist building from 1923.
