Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando
An important cultural institute located in a Baroque building in the city centre.
The San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts is one of the principal Spanish cultural institutes and since 1773 has occupied the emblematic Palacio de Goyeneche, located on Calle Alcalá, close to Puerta de Sol. This Baroque-style palace has diverse spaces, both classic and modern, and houses an important collection of masterpieces of Spanish, Italian and Flemish art.
The building occupies an elongated plot of land and has façades on two streets, creating an irregular, but more or less rectangular, layout. The ground plan is almost symmetrical and structured around the staircase and two central courtyards.
Among the spaces, of note is the Patio del Lucernario, recently glassed in, a unique space with beautiful contrasts of Baroque architecture, and the hall of the museum with one of the most striking, monumental Baroque staircases in Madrid.
Other rooms of note are the historic Archive-Library, the Events Hall with perfect acoustics, the Patio de Reproducciones and the classical-style Sala de Columnas with its four enormous windows that overlook Calle Alcalá
