Residencia de Estudiantes

The Students’ Halls of Residence of Madrid was founded in 1910 and became the first cultural centre in Spain. As a centre for scientific and artistic creation and exchange, its residents have included Federico García Lorca, Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel and Severo Ochoa.

Since 1915, it has occupied a unique group of pavilions designed by architect Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta, in the Mudéjar style, that prioritise functionality.

Among the spaces, of note are the historic events hall in the main building, 90 rooms used by researchers in the so-called Pabellones Gemelos and the historic garden with its Jardín de las Adelfas, designed by Juan Ramón Jiménez, Paseo de las Acacias and Canalillo. There are also more modern spaces, including the Sala Sur, office areas and a roof terrace.
