Teatro Calderón

The Teatro Calderón stands on the Plaza Jacinto Benavente in the city centre, close to the Puerta de Sol and the Plaza Mayor. Dating back to 1917, this historical theatre stages musicals and plays.

Its restoration made it possible to recover some original elements on its spectacular façade, the central element of which is the tower on the corner of Calle Atocha and Calle Doctor Cortezo. Of note are its numerous ornamental elements in the Modernist style, its caryatids and atlantes, and its happily restored first floor balustrade.

Its main hall has a capacity for over 1000 spectators seated in the stalls area, or in its boxes or two amphitheatres. Other outstanding spaces are:

  • The Kenday Room, characterised by its open plan design, its modern style, and the views it affords over the square.
  • The Hall, a circular space with a high ceiling, decorated with stained glass windows from the House of Maumejean, and a large lamp in the centre.
  • The rehearsal room with parquet floors and a large mirror that runs along the wall from one side to the other.
