The area around the José Hierro Public Library
The José Hierro Public Library, part of the Community of Madrid’s network of public libraries, was inaugurated in 2003 on Calle Rafaela Ybarra, in the Usera district, opposite the local District Council and the Health Centre.
Designed by architects Ignacio Ábalos and Juan Herrero, the library occupies an elegantly proportioned tower with a total surface area of 3,751 m2, with 259 spaces for reading and 47 for Internet use. The building’s verticality is one of its main expressions.
The library, which has long public opening hours, organises numerous workshops, courses, storytelling sessions and exhibitions, and offers its users multimedia workstations and an extensive collection of books and audiovisual material.
