Colonia Ciudad Jardín Castañeda

A former development of single-family homes in Alto de Extremadura.

Castañeda Ciudad Jardín is a residential development built in 1929 in what is now the neighbourhood of Puerta de Ángel to house workers from the former North Railway Station (Estación del Norte, now Príncipe Pío Station).

Its archetypal construction was a two-storey single-family home with a simple structure. The upper-floor windows were located over the main entrance and there was a small courtyard in the front where plants like vines or small trees were placed.

The homes have retained their essential character: they’re low in height compared to the blocks found in this area, which is near Alto de Extremadura metro station. However, the development now features a diverse range of architecture as a number of the houses have been remodelled.
