Entorno del edificio Celosía

The Celosía Building is a block of social housing in the Sanchinarro neighbourhood of Madrid, designed by the architect Blanca Lleó and the MVRDV studio and built between 2001 and 2008.

Designed as an alternative to the traditional closed block and inspired by a trellis, this remarkable building contains 146 social housing units on nine floors. The building combines thirty volumes with thirty empty spaces, which are intended as communal areas to encourage neighbourly coexistence. The result is a perforated block in which a dialogue is established through large gaps between the exterior and interior of the building. This interplay of empty and full spaces creates a latticework or trellis of gigantic proportions.

Six arcades connect the central courtyard to the street through all the façades. The gradient of the surrounding streets allows for ramp-free access to the first and second basements, where the garages and storerooms are located. The street and each house offer views in every direction; through the landscaped courtyards, perspectives open up between the wooded interior of the block and the city and mountains of Madrid on the distant horizon.
