The area around the commercial street of Avenida de la Albufera in the neighbourhood of San Diego is home to a variety of Puente de Vallecas public facilities, including Puente de Vallecas Market and the Municipal District Assembly Building.

Although Puente de Vallecas Market has only one floor, thanks to the slope of the street it stands on, Calle Martínez de la Riva, it actually has two levels. Opened in 1950, it has a classic appearance thanks to its three dressed grey granite entrances, crowned with a pediment and adorned with two small spheres. In 2007, the market was completely refurbished and commercially restructured to include a supermarket and a car park for customers in the basement, completing its current image with a full range of establishments, including food shops, bars, a shoe shop, a pharmacy and a dry cleaner’s. The building stands out due to its longitudinal opening, which is enhanced by the diversity of its entrances.

Located nearby is the old town hall building of Vallecas, which is now home to the Municipal District Assembly. It is a government building from 1947, whose classical porticoed façade stands out amongst the avenue’s humble buildings. It is included in the catalogue of municipal protected buildings and contains singular elements like its main staircase, which is in marble with an iron banister with brass work and stained glass, making it the building’s most emblematic feature.

Its vestibule has conserved its original carved doors and decorated panels and a magnificent translucent leaded glass recessed light fixture, which transmits natural light from a central skylight. The Assembly Hall, where it holds its municipal plenary sessions, has conserved its original classical decoration of walls with plaster pilasters, mouldings and coffering on the ceiling, carved doors, furniture and lamps.
