Invernadero del Palacio de Cristal de Arganzuela

Glass Palace Greenhouse is a botanical garden and greenhouse in the Arganzuela district. It is part of the historic architectural complex of the former Municipal Slaughterhouse and Livestock Market, which is today the Matadero Madrid Centre for Contemporary Creation.

Built by architect Luis Bellido y González between 1908 and 1928, white metal and glass dominate its construction. It was renovated in 1992, using the 19th-century greenhouses of Vienna and London as models, and has become a notable example of industrial architecture.

Its 7,100-square-metre interior has a main area and four enclosed spaces that represent different microclimates and house over 9,000 plant species. Plants are categorised into the four areas: tropical flora, subtropical flora, succulents and cacti, and aquatic plants. There are also pools, fountains, streams and aquariums of fish from different habitats.
