Barrio de San Nicolás
This neighbourhood in Dehesa de la Villa, in the Valdezarza district, was planned in 1954 and is also known as the San Nicolás Group. It consists of six linear ten-storey blocks, with eight flats per floor, built as part of Francisco Franco’s National Plan for Limited Income Housing. The complex is completed by a Social Centre for the Elderly.
The blocks that line Calle Sánchez Preciado have no obvious layout, having been built on a slight slope to avoid the trenches and fortifications left over from the Civil War. Since 1992, the IVIMA has been rehabilitating the structure, roofs, façades, galleries, staircases and lifts. The work carried out on the façades has brought colour to the previously colourless blocks.
