Historic centre of Villaverde
Villaverde Alto is the historic centre of Villaverde (formerly San Andrés). It consists of the tree-lined Paseo de Alberto Palacios, San Andrés Church, Villaverde Alto Market, Plaza de Ágata and Plaza Mayor (in the photos), both recently restored. As well as streets such as Calle Antimonio, Calle Oxígeno, Avenida Real de Pinto and Calle Albino Hernández Lázaro. This was the centre and origin of the ancient town of Villaverde.
In the past, the district of Villaverde was a cereal-producing rural centre on the outskirts of Madrid. The transformation of Villaverde began in the mid-19th century, culminating in the subsequent waves of immigration. From 1950, the area left its agricultural past behind and became an industrial centre. It is also characterised by the proliferation of external barriers, such as motorways, and internal barriers, such as the railway line and industrial estates.
The municipality of Villaverde became part of Madrid in 1954.
