Cementerio de Fuencarral

The original cemetery was built by Juan de Villanueva between 1804 and 1809. In 1936, the site was used as a burial place for soldiers of the International Brigades who fought and died in the area. Today it is known for its funerary monuments, which pay tribute to the fallen in the Civil War and the Second World War.

Of particular note is the monument to the volunteers from the Soviet Union who fought in the Spanish Civil War. It was inaugurated in 1989. This large series of sculptures is made of polished pink granite. Another monument, inaugurated in 1995, pays tribute to the 50,000 Spaniards who died in the Second World War, while several plaques commemorate the members of the International Brigades. Also visible are the yoke and arrows carved on the tomb of the first local head of the Falangist movement, who died in August 1936.
