Cerro de Garabitas

If you climb to the top of one of the hills in Casa de Campo Park, such as Garabitas or Las Canteras, you can see the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains and almost the entire park, with its patchwork of colours that change with the seasons. Garabitas hill also offers an incredible panoramic view of the city of Madrid.

Casa de Campo Park has a biodiversity of plants and animals that make it one of Madrid’s most important green spaces. The park dates back to 1562, when Philip II bought the estate from the Vargas family. With the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, Casa de Campo Park became the property of Madrid City Council. During the Civil War, the park was the scene of important historical events, such as the Battle of Madrid and the Battle of Garabitas, a hill of great geostrategic importance during the conflict. As a result of the fighting, much of the park’s historical heritage was lost, and even today visitors can still see the remains of buildings and fortifications from the Civil War.
