Ciudad de los Ángeles
The City of Angels was created as a satellite city to house an immigrant population. Planned in 1956, it was built almost at the same time as the nearby city of San Cristóbal, whose functionalist urban design it shares.
It is a complex of more than six thousand dwellings, made up of groups of open blocks of 5 to 12 storeys, usually running parallel to each other. There are always open spaces between the buildings, with terraced gardens and concrete colonnades. The central artery is lined by parks, primary schools, a secondary school, a church and shops.
Although most of the houses were built between 1956 and 1968, the City of Angels continued to grow until the 1980s, a period that produced some unique buildings such as the Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles religious school.
Various housing estates have been built on the outskirts of the neighbourhood (San Nicolás, Virgen de la Esperanza, etc.), making it a very heterogeneous area.
