Colonia Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro
Designed in 1941 and built over three decades in post-war Madrid, the Our Lady of Perpetual Help housing estate is located in the Palomeras Bajas district.
This neighbourhood feels more like a village; it is a collection of more than a thousand protected housing units built by the National Housing Institute, with a food market, religious residences, a police station, schools, a family centre, a church, a parish house and housing estates.
According to the COAM Architecture Foundation, its “emphatic architectural language, framed in the best tradition of classicism applied to housing, makes it a unique neighbourhood”. Linear, closed or U-shaped blocks interact with the surrounding city without losing their unity. Towards Avenida de la Albufera, the backs of the open blocks offer disturbing openings in their longitudinal axes”.
