Colonias municipales de casas baratas Salud y Ahorro y Valdenúñez
The construction of the “Salud y Ahorro” estate of very cheap and low-cost houses, located on land belonging to Huerta del Torero and Regajo de Valdenúñez, began in 1931 with the aim of solving the problem of shanty towns. It consists of 702 houses in 37 blocks, all with water and electricity. The houses were renovated and extended between 1934 and 1940, giving them a new, less austere appearance.
In 1932, the City Council began to build social housing in Valdenúñez, to the north of the aforementioned “Salud y Ahorro” estate. Facilities such as crèches, schools, swimming pools, public toilets, showers and laundries, sports grounds and health clinics were also built.
By 1936, according to the COAM Architectural Foundation, 756 houses had been built in 75 blocks covering an area of 8 square kilometres. After being partially destroyed during the Civil War, the estate was rebuilt and rehabilitated between 1940 and 1944.
