Gran Vía
Gran Vía, which stretches from Calle de Alcalá to Plaza de España, is one of Madrid’s most emblematic and renowned thoroughfares. Built in sections between 1910 and 1931, its construction over nearly three decades enriched the diversity of architectural styles visible along its length.
- Between Calle de Alcalá and Red de San Luis stand buildings in the historicist style, reviving architectural forms from the past.
- From Red de San Luis (the junction of Calle de la Montera and Gran Vía) to Plaza del Callao.
- From Plaza del Callao to Plaza de España the buildings take on a more functional character.
Today, this grand century-old avenue, bustling at all hours, is home to numerous shops, restaurants, theatres and cinemas.
Wide and strikingly flanked by ornate façades, it is one of the city’s most iconic locations, frequently captured in film and the visual arts.
