Plaza de Santa Cruz

The Plaza de Santa Cruz, which is connected to the Plaza de la Provincia, is a very central meeting point that connects the Plaza Mayor and Calle Atocha through the archway and the arcades of Calle Zaragoza. As a backdrop, the Palacio de Santa Cruz which is the current headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It has historically been a typical space for street markets, especially at Christmas, and even today a popular merry-go-round may well be set up during the holidays. The rest of the year, the square fills up with the terraces of its restaurants and cafes, and with typical shops under the arcade which is so characteristic of the area around Plaza Mayor.

A pleasant open space in the centre of Madrid that is a quieter alternative to the rather more packed and touristy terraces of the Plaza Mayor, without losing the essence of being in the heart of the Madrid de los Austrias (Hapsburg Madrid).
