Polígono industrial Julián Camarillo

An industrial area in the city with striking architectural contrasts.

Julián Camarillo Industrial Estate emerged in the neighbourhood of Simancas between the 1950s and 1970s, as a base of operations for industrial companies. The economy’s gradual transformation led these factories to shift to the outskirts of the city, or even to cease their activity and close down.

Today, streets like Calle Julián Camarillo and Calle Miguel Yuste still harbour a great many companies, which enjoy a prime location with connections to two of the city’s ring roads, the M-30 and M-40, right near Madrid-Barajas airport and just metres from the motorway to Barcelona.

The industrial estate is now integrated into the city and its original purpose has changed. Although it holds office buildings these days, it does still have some factories, warehouses and workshops as well as vestiges of its recent past in the form of abandoned buildings and lots.

The presence of offices has attracted tertiary service providers, such as hospitality businesses or commercial premises (private clinics, gyms and hotels) and has increased the number of residential homes. This variety explains the area’s pronounced architectural contrasts, on streets where glass buildings are found alongside industrial red-brick and concrete premises and blocks of flats no higher than six storeys.

The tech companies located in the area are driving up its value with a view to it eventually becoming a technology district in Madrid, similar to the tech hubs of major European and North American cities.
